Stop the Stink Bug Invasion

Its almost that time again. Every year about this time we start getting calls and hearing of homes being invaded by Lady bugs and Stink bugs. Don’t let it happen to your home. The most important thing you can do is make sure your house is sealed properly. Make sure all screens on windows and doors are repaired and no cuts or holes in them. Use caulk around windows to fill any gaps. Cover outside vents with mesh to prevent easy access. You can also add screen or mesh to the inside of  attic vents on the sides of your home. Don’t let these pests use your home for wintering this year.

One of our technicians, Greg, sent this picture to the office today. He was doing an initial service for general pest control. This is something you don’t see every day. When the spiders are tough enough to catch and eat the snakes it may be time to hire a professional. Thank goodness Greg isn’t scared of either. I have to say it is one of the meanest looking Black Widow spiders I have ever seen. At least the spider was helping the home owner keep the snake population in check.

Caleb Walker, owner of Walker Pest Management was recently interviewed by News 7 WSPA.

WSPA News 7 wanted to know what home owners could do to prevent pest control problems at home on their own. Mr. Walker gives many tips on preventing insect invasions before they happen, and what to do in case of emergency situations when don’t have time to get an exterminator out. [Background Story: Joan and Katie called in with a problem with fleas in a house they were renting while going to college. They had no pets and could not understand why they were having issues with fleas. Our technicians made a couple visits to get the situation taken care of. What the technician figured out was there was actually a rodent problem under the house and the rodents were hosts to the fleas. The Stink Bugs are here. These pesky little creatures have have taken the East coast by storm. During the summer they were mostly a problem for farms and orchards. Now that the weather is cooling they are looking for food and warmth by pushing there way into local homes and offices.
These pests, originally from South East Asia are not native to North America. They are believed to have been brought over on container ships by accident.
The Stink Bugs do not bite or sting. They are not known to carry any sickness or disease. They do however posses the ability to secrete a nasty musty smell. They do this when they are touched or threatened.
You would think they aren’t that bad then. You would be wrong. Because they are not native to North America they have no known predators. They are resistant to many pesticides. They have been known to destroy entire crops. I had a lot of trouble with these critters in my own garden this summer. I had to resort to collecting them by hand everyday to keep them in check. They did wipe out all of my squash plants.
One of the best things you can do for your home to keep them out is to make sure your house is sealed up properly. If you have any gaps under doors use felt or weather stripping to seal them up. The same process can be used for windows. Sticky traps or glue traps can work well inside the home. Place them near windows and doors that open to the outside. A Pest control company can help by treating the exterior of your home with a product such as Cypermethrin. This will create a barrier between the Stink Bugs outside and the warmth inside they are looking for.
